American Express Gold Card: Our Take
Overview
The American Express Gold card has much to be loved. Its excellent bonus-earning rates at U.S. supermarkets and restaurants make it a fan favorite. Should you soon be flying, you will also be earning additional Membership Rewards points for travel.
Paired with up to $120 in Uber Cash annually (for U.S. Uber rides or Uber Eats orders, the card must be added to the Uber app to receive this benefit), up to $120 in dining statement credits to be used with eligible partners, an up to $84 Dunkin’ credit each year and an up to $100 Resy credit annually, there’s no reason foodies shouldn’t carry the Amex Gold in their wallet.
These advantages by themselves offset the $325 annual charge on the Amex Gold card and exceed $400. Note that enrollment is needed for a few specific perks.
Benefits
- 4 points per dollar spent on meals in restaurants and U.S. supermarkets (on the first $50,000 in purchases per calendar year; then 1 point per dollar spent thereafter and $25,000 in purchases per calendar year; then 1 point per dollar spent thereafter, respectively).
- 3 points for every dollar spent on flights booked either directly through amextravel.com or the airline.
- Full of credits foodies will enjoy
- Solid welcome bonus
Drawbacks
- Not as beneficial for people from outside the United States.
- Using Uber and other eating rewards could prove difficult for some.
